Bio:
As a bay area resident (by way of New York), Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist made his mark by curating top notch events featuring hip hop legends and supporting independent artists from the Bay and beyond. In 2000, his True Skool events won the "Best of the Bay" in the SF Bay Guardian. Ren has appeared on numerous publications, such as the XLR8R, 7x7, SF Weekly, SF Examiner, Mugshot and SF Magazine, to name a few. since True Skool's inception in 1999, his online magazine and newsletter has served as an information resource that covers hip hop history, politics, and events. As a DJ, he has shared bills with world-renowned artists such as Mixmaster Mike, Grandmaster Flash, Jazzy Jeff, Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Kool DJ Red Alert, Q-Bert, Cut Chemist, DJ Premier, Wu-Tang Clan, Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest), Michael Franti & Spearhead, Masta Ace, KRS-One, Lupe Fiasco, Lyrics Born, Pharcyde, DJ Bobbito, DJ Cash Money and the list goes on. His diverse selections are influenced by his east coast background, from b-boying in the early 80s to attending house parties and New York City clubs. He experienced the New York City underground rave scene in it's heyday at legendary rave parties such as Nasa at the Shelter in the early 90s. Then, the acid-jazz scene at Giant Step parties and the soul/funk revival at Soul Kitchen. Ren is a professional party rocker who can put it down among the best of them with a vast arsenal of vinyl weapons to drop on any dancefloor, ranging from hip hop & soul to electro, house and breaks to trip hop and acid jazz. He has graced most venues in San Francisco with his non-stop seemless sets, making appearances at Temple, Mighty, Mezzanine, Ruby Skye, 1015, The Independent, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Sony Metreon, among a slew of other venues. In addition, he has appeared at Michael Franti & Spearhead's annual "9-11 Power to the Peaceful Festival", TV-20's "Distortion2Static" hip hop show and KPFA's Hardknock Radio.

Oakland Freedom Jazz Society (Monday weekly musical showcase)
Jazz Happy Hour with Live Musical guests and Jazz Selector/Pop Up Jazz Record Shop by VAMP
In the spirit of Jazz Center of 52nd Street New York from the 40’s through the 50’s and the Loft Jazz movement of the early 70’s comes a weekly Jazz workshop for folks yearning for more cerebral music rather than dance music. A way to clear the head and start the week off right.
Live Jazz will follow the model of the Royal Cuckoo “artist in residence” with guest groups dropping in 1-2 a month
Bands will curated by:
Nick Rossi of the Nick Rossi Trio – Smith Dobson (Vibraphone) Eric Markowitz (Bass) & Nick Rossi (Guitar). Nick is a local Jazz artist who has performed all over the country and overseas. He has collaborated with many local Jazz musicians like Marcus Shelby to Roscoe Mitchell (of Art Ensemble of Chicago). In addition to being a great musician, Nick works in event marketing & management for Wilson West.
Fernando Carpenter, owner of VAMP Music & Art:
Fernando has been collecting music for over 25 years with a focus on Americana (Jazz to Soul from the 1950’s-1970’s). He currently organizes a bi-weekly music series called SoundOut! featuring music “with feeling”
Vinnie Esparza, Groove Merchant Records:
Vinnie was the first DJ to be invited to spin at the Monterey Jazz Festival.
Colin Gleason (Saxophone):
Colin has collaborated with a wide range of artists, from Lord Loves a Working Man to Joe Henderson, a regular at Café Van Kleef. Colin works at the Booking/Box office at Yoshis, Oakland/San Francisco.
Peter Smith:
Music director for KUSF, and Improvising musician.
**
The night will feature live improvised music from guest artists (three 45 minute sets) and will also feature rotating jazz record selectors. The music will range from soul-jazz, spiritual, straight ahead to avant-garde jazz. The Jazz selectors will keep the music going between bands. PLUS we will offer a JAZZ pop up Jazz Record Shop sponsored by VAMP Music & Art, most records you hear will be available for sale.

- BIO
A staple in the Bay Area for years, lady DJ Zita has been steadily building a DJ queendom beat by beat. Known as a party rocker, classic record provider, tireless promoter and meticulous organizer, Zita has brought her sisterhood sounds to dancefloors on both coasts and overseas since 1999. Her captivating sound spans the eras and blends genres of body-rockin' music; she'll seamlessly segue from boombox classic hip hop to mothership trunk funk, spin smooth R&B treats along with timeless soul heroines and heroes, flip reggae dancehall riddims, throwback to '80s pop freestyle, and groove the dancefloor with her soulful deep house. At first one of only a handful of women on the scene, Zita established Bay Area Sistah Sound (BASS) to unite women DJs and performers. She can also be found most weekends holding down residencies in San Francisco and Oakland as part of DJ duo Golden Soundscapes with partner Dmadness, as well as producing fresh events spotlighting women in hip hop and guesting at many premier music nights and venues. With her dazzling style, fierce determination, and golden touch on the wheels, DJ Zita has changed the landscape and continues to shine.

About
East Bay on the Brain (EBOB) is a quarterly reading series that showcases East Bay writers and writers who love the East Bay. We plan to run on a February, May, August, November schedule, on Saturday evenings, 7-9pm, though that may change if we outgrow our fabulous venue, The Layover, or life intervenes. Thus far, we have featured a range of writing, including short fiction, novel excerpts, poetry, and creative non-fiction, but are open to other forms. Just ask!
Founded and hosted by Lauren Becker, Editor-in-Chief of Corium Magazine, writer, and proud Oakland resident, EBOB hopes to collaborate with other reading series and events, journals, writing programs, book sellers, other talented artists, and writers and friends, to show off what we’ve got going on. Because we’ve got it going on.
Contact: Lauren at lbecker@coriummagazine.com with questions, comments, compliments, offers of website assistance, offers of patronage (i.e. financial assistance. No creepy or inappropriate strings attached, please), and/or pledges of lifelong devotion. We also enjoy haikus and riddles. Put “EBOB” in the subject line, please.
